Mahal's Contribution
Mahal was the name given to 3,500 volunteers from around the world who came to help the Haganah in the War of Independence. They served as pilots, navigators, radio operators, aerial photographers, and in many other roles.
Then Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion spoke of their support:
The Mahal Forces were the Diaspora's most important contribution to the survival of the State of Israel.
Every year, since 1948, the Mahal track has enabled volunteers from around the world to join the army and continue to contribute to the State of Israel.
They came to us when we needed them most, in those difficult and fateful days of our War of Independence, you have given not only from your experience but your life too. The Israeli people and the State of Israel will never forget." - Former Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin ז"ל
